Mike Tyson's cannabis advocacy is gaining serious political momentum.
The former heavyweight champ is leading the Coalition of Athletes and Entertainers Supporting President Trump's Policy Objectives, which includes NBA star Kevin Durant and former NFL star Dez Bryant.
Their target? Decades of failed cannabis policy have created an economically detrimental system for businesses operating legally under state law, while foreign cannabis companies benefit from clearer regulations.
The coalition wrote a letter to President Donald Trump outlining specific reforms that would practically reshape how our industry does business. Tyson wants the nation to unlock billions in economic growth currently trapped by the legal conflicts between state and federal laws.

Mike Tyson focuses his cannabis reform efforts on three main policy changes. The goal? To harmonize federal law with a modern medical understanding of how cannabis can benefit individuals, businesses, and the economy.
1. The coalition is demanding clemency for those serving lengthy federal sentences for nonviolent marijuana offenses. It directly addresses marijuana-related injustices that have disproportionately impacted communities nationwide. Iron Mike argued on Fox News that continued incarceration for cannabis-related crimes makes no sense whatsoever, economically and socially.
2. Rescheduling marijuana from a Schedule I substance to Schedule III may be the coalition's most impactful proposal. This would completely change the game for the cannabis industry. The research floodgates would open, and the cannabis business could take standard business deductions currently denied under federal tax law. The current classification treats cannabis identically to heroin, and Tyson says that's "just ridiculous."
3. The third focus addresses how American cannabis operators are unjustly denied banking services. Over 500,000 people can't obtain mortgages or basic financial services because they work with state-legal cannabis operators. Businesses face unjust barriers, and this forces an entire industry to operate in cash while employees struggle to access basic financial tools.

Part of the issue is Tyson's frustration with Former President Biden and his administration's ongoing push for criminal justice reform, which never really happened.
President Biden failed to deliver on campaign promises to address these injustices, leaving office without commuting sentences or approving clemency applications. So, it has become the coalition's goal to ensure these three reforms not only stay on President Trump's radar but also become a reality.
Marijuana rescheduling would encourage research into cannabis, its uses, and therapeutic benefits. It would also give cannabis businesses equal access to the financial services they deserve.
In hopes that this administration will pass common-sense laws, Tyson and his coalition are laser-focused on specific, achievable reforms that would drive economic growth and address unjust marijuana related offenses nationwide.

But does Mike Tyson smoke weed? Absolutely. His advocacy stems directly from his personal experience with cannabis' benefits. He never shies away from mentioning that the plant changed his life for the better.
While he believes that President Joe Biden was making sweeping promises to correct glaring disparities and present fair economic opportunities in the cannabis industry, Tyson and his coalition are urging President Trump to take action.
